How to use the calculator

GS Pay Calculator is part of the broader General Schedule pay system. The most useful way to approach the topic is to identify which element is changing: grade, step, locality, pay year, or pay system.

Grades GS-1 through GS-15 identify levels in the General Schedule, while Steps 1 through 10 identify pay points within each grade. A complete salary lookup normally requires both values.

For employees covered by locality pay, the official duty station determines the applicable OPM locality area. Locality areas can cross city and state boundaries, so the formal definition should be used.

Current-year salary figures should come from a current-year official table. Historical pages should retain their original year instead of silently replacing old values with new rates.

Special salary rates and some law-enforcement schedules can supersede ordinary GS locality figures. The employee’s pay plan and agency documentation are important when an exception may apply.
