How to Use the 2017 GS Pay Calculator
Use the 2017 GS Pay Calculator to look up the General Schedule base salary for any grade from GS-1 through GS-15 and any step from Step 1 through Step 10.
Select your GS grade and step above. The calculator displays the annual base salary from the 2017 General Schedule table together with monthly, biweekly and approximate hourly equivalents.
What Your GS Grade Means
The General Schedule contains 15 grades. A higher grade generally represents a position with greater responsibility, complexity or qualification requirements. The grade applicable to an employee is determined by the classification of the federal position.
For current grade-specific information, an employee at GS-7 can review the GS-7 pay scale , while an employee at GS-12 can review the GS-12 pay scale .
What Your GS Step Means
Each GS grade contains 10 steps. Step 1 is the first regular rate within a grade and Step 10 is the highest regular step rate within that grade.

Base Pay Is Not Always Final Salary
This calculator shows the 2017 nationwide General Schedule base salary. Base pay should not automatically be treated as an employee's final payable salary.

Example of Using the 2017 Calculator
Suppose you want to find the 2017 base salary for GS-9 Step 5. Select GS-9 from the grade menu and Step 5 from the step menu. The calculator retrieves that exact grade-and-step annual base rate from the stored 2017 GS salary table.
It then converts the annual amount into monthly, biweekly and approximate hourly figures for easier comparison.
Annual, Monthly, Biweekly and Hourly Pay
The annual figure shown by the calculator is the General Schedule base annual salary stored for the selected grade, step and pay year.
Monthly pay is calculated by dividing the annual amount by 12. Biweekly pay is calculated by dividing the annual amount by 26. The approximate hourly figure uses a 2,087-hour annual divisor.
These conversions are provided for comparison purposes. They should not be treated as an employee's exact paycheck because actual payroll can be affected by taxes, retirement deductions, insurance, premium pay and other factors.
